Just because you don’t have a GUI on your Windows Server 2012 doesn’t mean you can’t install roles and features at will. Use PowerShell, and the job gets easy.
Now let’s get something straight right away. Ideally, you’ll be administering your servers, core or otherwise, via an MMC or other remote interface. You should never have to log on to the machine at the console or via RDP except if connectivity is borked for some reason. Use your MMC or PowerShell skillz. Trust me, it’s a good thing.
The Basics
Installing a role or feature on a Windows Server via PowerShell is very straightfoward. Check out the following command:
Install-WindowsFeature -Name Web-Server -IncludeAllSubFeature
See, I told you it was pretty easy. That command will install the web server role/feature, with all sub-features required for it. It’s a lot easier than typing this at the PowerShell prompt:

How Does this Help?
Using this new found knowledge, we can include this in a script file to deploy a role or feature to a group of servers. Here’s an example that will deploy Hyper-V to six servers:

Using this short script, you could develop a larger script that would configure a series of servers. For example, you could build a script or set of scripts that would deploy a three-tier appllication which includes a web server, an application server, and a database server complete with SQL.
I’ve included a table with this post (below) of roles and features aviailable, but you can also pop out a nice nested list within the PowerShell console to get a list of roles and features available, as well as which ones are currently enabled, by using this command:
