Disable Search Suggestions in Windows 7

Some people love it, some people hate it. Use this registry hack to disable to Search Suggestion feature of Explorer in Windows 7.

During navigation of your computer with Windows Explorer, you have the option of using the search function in the upper right corner of the Window. When you type a few characters in the search box, Explorer begins populating the search suggestions. You can realize small performance gain by disabling this functionality, and it’s easier than you think!

  1. Click the Start orb.
  2. Type regedit and press Enter.
  3. Navigate to the following registry key:HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\Explorer
  4. Right-click on Explorer and select New > DWORD value.
  5. Give it a name of DisableSearchBoxSuggestions with a value of 1.

Close out of the Registry Editor. Your search history in Windows Explorer will no longer be saved or displayed.
