What to Do When Your Windows Power Options Disappear

By | 2024-10-01

If you’re suddenly seeing the message “There are currently no power options available in Windows” pop up on your computer, don’t worry – it’s a pretty common problem that’s usually pretty easy to fix.

Everyone was a beginner at one time or another, so I know how frustrating it can be when something goes wrong and you’re not sure what to do. But I’m here to walk you through some simple troubleshooting steps to get your power settings back up and running.

First things first, let’s check your power plan. Open up the Control Panel and look for the “Power Options” section. Make sure a power plan like “Balanced” or “High Performance” is selected. If not, try creating a new plan and see if that does the trick.

If that doesn’t work, let’s try restarting the Windows Explorer process. Open up the Task Manager (you can do this by right-clicking on the taskbar and selecting “Task Manager”), go to the “Processes” tab, find “Windows Explorer”, and click “Restart”. This can sometimes resolve issues with missing power options.

Another troubleshooting step is to run the built-in Power Troubleshooter. Just type “troubleshoot” in the Windows search bar, select “Troubleshoot”, and then choose “Power”. The troubleshooter will scan for any problems and walk you through the steps to fix them.

If you’re still having issues, it might be time to update or reinstall your power management drivers. Open the Device Manager (search for it in the start menu), expand the “Batteries” and “Power Management controllers” sections, and try updating or uninstalling the drivers for those items. Windows should then automatically reinstall the correct ones.

One last thing to check is whether there are any BIOS updates available for your computer. Outdated BIOS can sometimes cause power management problems, so it’s worth checking your manufacturer’s website to see if there are any updates you can install.

Hopefully one of those solutions helps get your power options back! Let me know if you have any other questions. I’m always happy to lend a hand to fellow novice computer users.
