Turn off IE ESC in Windows Server 2008

By | 2009-09-01

Internet Explorer Enhanced Security Configuration can be a real drag. Now I’m not condoning surfing the web from a server. Far from it. If you decide to surf the web from your server, that security and stability risk is stictly your own.

There are some server-based applications that utilize the IE DLLs in order to “talk” to other servers on the local network. IE ESC can block some of these applications. For example, a front-end web server may not be able to communicate with its back-end app server, in essence breaking the application.

Thankfully, it is relatively easy to restore your application to its full glory by simply turning off ESC, by following these steps:

  1. Open Server Manager
  2. Click the top item in the tree to the left Server Manager
  3. On the page that appears, click on Configure IE ESC in Security Information
  4. To turn off ESC as needed

Now save your surfing for your personal machine.
