Building your Family Tree in Excel

By | 2024-07-05

Looking to put together a family tree but feeling a little overwhelmed?  Excel can be your secret weapon! Here are two cool ways to create a visual history of your relatives.

1. Let’s Get Template Savvy

Excel has pre-made templates just for family trees. These come with boxes and lines already set up, so all you have to do is fill in the blanks.  Just head to the “File” menu and then “New”. In the search bar, type in “family tree” and see what pops up!  There should be a free downloadable template or two waiting for you.

Once you choose a template, it’ll open up with some sample text.  Swap out those names with your family members and add any other details you want to include. It’s like having a coloring book for your family history!

2. Building from Scratch: A DIY Approach

Maybe you crave a more customized family tree? No problem! Excel lets you build your tree from the ground up using shapes and lines.

Here’s the gist:

  • Grab the “Insert Shapes” tool and create boxes for each family member. Think of them as little picture frames for your relatives!
  • Arrange the boxes on your spreadsheet like a real family tree. Parents usually go at the top, with their children below them, branching out like a family forest.
  • Now comes the fun part: connecting the family! Use the “Insert Lines” tool (the angled line works well here) to draw lines between parents and their children.
  • Once you have your family placed and connected, click on each box and type in your relative’s name. You can even add birthdates or little notes if you want.

Feeling fancy?  Throw in some pictures (use “Insert” then “Picture”) next to each name.  Excel lets you personalize your family tree however you like!

And there you have it!  Two ways to use Excel and build a fantastic family tree.  So grab your laptop, gather your family info, and get ready to become a genealogy whiz!
